Herb Ritts
Herb Ritts was an American photographer. He is well known for his portraits that were shown on famous fashion magazines, like Vogue, Vanity Fair, and Calvin Klein. His photos focus on people and the way the light creates shapes of shadows over the people's figures. There was great emphasis in the way shadows enhanced the curves and dips of a body. This was very appealing to the people and good advertisements. Reading through his biography, he was donating and advocating for several different programs, one being HIV/AIDS. He also wanted to challenge the gender roles with his photographs, since they were put out in the public. He wanted people to break from restricting gender roles.
His collection of photos were visually pleasing, the amount of shadows enhancing the body, and the poses the models were positioned in was very unique. It is something that is seen a lot in magazines now a days. His photos are the type I think of when someone mentions Vogue. The style he had for photoshoots, I believe have inspired other photographers as well.
Versace Dress Back View, El Mirage, 1990

This photo is one of my favorite from his collection. It is simple, but with the dress up and creating a frame around the top part of the body adds to the photo overall. We can see the body figure from the person but the exposed skin makes the figure a bit mysterious. The open space around it being empty makes the figure stand out more, but more so the black dress. The composition of this photo is what makes this piece that much better, and captured my eye.
